Raising Wild Kids on Hatteras Island

If you’ve ever visited Hatteras Island, you know it’s a special place. But raising kids here? It’s a whole different kind of magic. My husband, a Hatteras Village native, and I are raising our three feral boys in a world where the ocean is their playground, the marsh is their classroom, and everyday is an adventure.

While our boys may have a backyard swing set, they prefer their playground to be the miles of beaches, soundside waters, and boat adventures. Whether it’s wading in tide pools, casting a line from the dock out our back door, or rolling in the sand, their days are spent immersed in nature. This wonderful place that we get to call home teaches them resilience – how to respect the water and appreciate the power of a storm rolling in over the Pamlico Sound.

One of the greatest gifts of raising kiddos here is the community. Neighbors aren’t just neighbors; they’re extended family. Whether it’s sharing your latest catch or supporting local businesses and school events, the sense of connection runs deep. Our boys are growing up surrounded by people who look out for one another, and that’s something you can’t put a price on.

Hatteras is more than just a home – it’s a teacher. Our kiddos are learning lessons that you just can’t learn in other places. They know how to navigate a boat before they can tie their shoes. They understand that hard work isn’t just a choice; it’s a way of life, whether it’s helping out at our business, Slash Creek Outfitters, or helping their dad with the latest house project. And most importantly, they’re growing up with an appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounds them.

Raising kids on Hatteras Island isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it. We may not have fast food on every corner or big box convenience stores, but we have something even better – wide open spaces, salt air, and the appreciation for a life well spent.

And if you ever see three feral little boys running barefoot down the dock, just know they’re exactly where they are meant to be.
