If you own a home on the NC coast, you’ve likely heard of the Fortified Roof Program. The program is a nationally recognized standard developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) to help strengthen homes against hurricanes, high winds, and hail. Especially here on the Outer Banks, many homeowners have taken advantage of this program to increase their property’s resilience and lower their insurance premiums.
But here’s something that many homeowners may not realize:
Your fortified roof designation certificate must be redesignated every five years.
What Is a FORTIFIED Roof Designation?
A FORTIFIED roof designation is written certification that a home has been built, renovated, or re-roofed according to FORTIFIED standards. When your home receives a FORTIFIED Roof upgrade, an independent evaluator inspects the work and submits documentation to the IBHS. Once approved, you receive a certificate confirming that your roof meets the FORTIFIED standard. This certificate can allow for insurance discounts and greater peace of mind during hurricane season!
However, the certificate is only valid for five years from the date of issuance.

Why Redesignation Matters
Re-designation ensures that your home continues to meet current fortified standards, any storm related damage or wear is addressed and you don’t lose eligibility for insurance discounts or fortified status.
How to Redesignate
Re-designation is a straightforward process. A certified FORTIFIED evaluator must verify the home still meets the FORTIFIED requirements. If the roof covering is in good condition, and no modifications have been made to the home since the last designation was issued, then the inspection is likely the one step that will be required!
NC 12 Realty’s Advice for Homeowners
As coastal real estate experts, we often see homeowners caught off guard by the expiration of their FORTIFIED designations – especially those who bought homes that were already designated. If you’re not sure when your designation was issued or whether it’s still valid, you can find the expiration on the bottom right-hand corner of the designation certificate. If you can’t find your certificate, we recommend completing this form.
Stay Storm-Ready and Informed
The FORTIFIED Roof Program is an excellent tool for protecting your coastal investment, but like anything, it requires a little maintenance. Re-designation is a simple step that ensures you’re getting the full value and protection of your upgraded roof.
